The Sun Life Waterloo Busker Carnival has been a staple of entertainment in the Waterloo Region since 1989. This volunteer-driven, not-for-profit event showcases a diverse array of talents. From awe-inspiring acrobatics and laugh-out-loud comedy to breathtaking fire breathing acts, we bring the world’s finest street performers right to Uptown Waterloo.

Entrance to our Carnival is free, making it accessible to all. Busking is one of the most honest forms of entertainment—you watch the show first and tip based on how much you enjoyed it. Our performers rely on those tips to earn a living, so if a show made you laugh, cheer, or stare in awe, we encourage you to show your appreciation.

What to Know Before You Go!

Is the Waterloo Busker Carnival accessible?

Yes! We aim to make the event welcoming for all:

Transit: ION light rail stops beside Waterloo Public Square.
Parking: Accessible spots in the Uptown Parkade (main level).
Washrooms: Accessible toilets in Waterloo Town Square (daytime) and throughout the site (Carnival hours).
Grounds: Mostly flat, paved paths with some grassy and sloped areas.
Seating: Limited built-in seating. Bring a blanket or portable chair if needed. Space allows for wheelchairs/scooters.
Service Animals: Welcome. Bring a blanket for hot pavement. Water available at the Info Tent.

By car (from Highway 401)

Take Highway 8 West toward Kitchener/Waterloo
Exit onto Highway 86 North to Waterloo
Take the Bridgeport Road East exit
Continue to King Street North in UpTown Waterloo

By light rail:

Take the ION to Waterloo Public Square Station, right next to a main stage

By train or GO Bus:

Arrive at Kitchener Station via VIA Rail or GO Transit
Transfer to the ION light rail heading north
Get off at Waterloo Public Square Station

The Carnival attracts thousands of visitors from across Waterloo Region, including Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge — and well beyond. People travel from other cities, across the border, and even overseas to experience the magic. Many have been attending since childhood and now return with families of their own, making it a cherished tradition passed down through generations. Whether you’re a local or visiting from out of town, this family-friendly festival in Kitchener-Waterloo offers something for everyone — from kids to grandparents, street performance fans to first-timers.

How much should I tip the performers?

What should I bring with me to the Carnival?

The Carnival happens rain or shine—and late August weather can be hot, cool, or rainy. Be prepared for anything!

Here’s what we suggest bringing:

Blanket or portable chair
Refillable water bottle (there will be a filling station onsite - Fri, Sat, & Sun)
Sunscreen and hat
Jacket or sweater for the evening
Umbrella (just in case)
Phone to check the online schedule
Cash for tipping performers ($2–$20); many also accept e-transfers via QR code

Pets: While pets are allowed, we recommend leaving them at home unless they’re service animals—the pavement can get very hot.
